Design as a flowing story
De Roos is a spiritual centre on Amsterdam’s Vondelpark. A place for self-knowledge, mental health and more conscious living. The previous user had gone bankrupt. Our client took it over. Not to make money from it, but out of personal motivation. The building had to come back to life.
What we found: a villa of 1,500 square metres, extended in phases since 1873. In 150 years it had housed all kinds of things. Inspired, but dusty and neglected. A maze where in some places the energy had come to a standstill.

We started with a 3D scan and archive research of the entire building. That way we also found elements that had gone unnoticed until then. We worked without a main contractor. Sometimes working drawings down to the last detail, sometimes a conversation on site. And all the while the business simply kept running.
As in every project, we analysed the routes of all users and guests, so that a visit feels like a flowing story. At De Roos we went one step further. Every room has a character of its own, through its location, shape and construction. We looked for the function that suits it, and emphasised that character in the design. And we worked from one vision: a visit as a journey from the earthly to the spiritual. From the low, mysterious basement, via the bel-étage, to the attic with its rafters.

In a villa this large, guests often don’t know where to go. And if you have a question, who do you ask? The standard solution is signage, or a reception desk that in practice is left unstaffed. We did something else.
We designed the routes of guests and staff so that they cross. No signage. And yet always someone nearby.
